"Star Light, Star Bright" Short Story Review

Free Speculative Fiction short stories online.

Read it here: "Star Light, Star Bright"
By Alfred Bester
In SciFi.com
Genre: Science Fiction
Word Count: 5,600 approx.

Reading Bester's "Star Light, Star Bright" is a lot like watching an episode of The Twilight Zone. It begins centred around one man and some odd behaviour. Finally he is forced to explain what he is doing, and I do mean forced. Two men have hit him over the head and dumped in a chair in their office where they beat him with a wet towel until he explains what is going on. Once they realise there is money in his plan, they fall in with him.

None of them realise how innocently they are approaching the danger.

Many sf readers will be familiar with Bester's work. My own favourite of his would be "Fondly Farenheit", which was made into a 60 minute feature for TV back in 1959 under the title of Murder and the Android (click here for info). Younger people, who might not be familar with his stories, may still know Bester's name. It was used in Babylon 5 for the troubled Psi Corps chief played by Walter Koenig. The final lines of Star Light Star Bright might almost be a description of the Koenig character's journey of the soul.
