Christopher Anvil liked the idea of Humans triumphing in battle over tremendous odds against alien forces. It's amazing that he didn't write a Star Trek episode. He did, however, have a setting called the Federation.
In this story, the humans claim to be pacifists, a monastic order, and that they just store things for people. The things they store keep well. Very well. They have very good technology and they know how to use it.
