Poe is famous for a lot of things, for his detective fiction, his horror fiction, his raven of few words. Sometimes the horror is unadulterated, as in "The Pit And The Pendulum", or The Telltale Heart", but sometimes there is a subtle hint of humour in the story, as when the lunatics take over the asylum, or in this one, in which madness and death are present, and yet the title is to be taken literally.
