When Jack, as a school boy, finds the stick lying in a charred crater, and when he realises that it is a ray-gun, he dreams of becoming a hero and fighting the bad guys. Then it occurs to him that he is more like Peter Parker than Spiderman.
This story details Jack's life as he grows up, keeping his secret, training for what ever mission might come his way, discovering girls. Then he begins to realise that he is neither Parker nor Spiderman. Perhaps he is more like Frodo.
But the ray-gun is an alien artifact. It might have thoughts of its own.
