By Cordwainer Smith

Genre: science fiction

Cordwainer Smith was not his real name. I keep forgetting what it was, but I do remember reading that his reason for using a pen name was that his muse demanded it. When, before, his cover had been blown, he had been unable to write for a while. Then he chose a new name, Cordwainer Smith, and got back to work.

Smith's future history involved the use of enhanced animals as an underclass of servants for Humanity.

Meanwhile, on a planet called Norstrilia, (after northern Australia), a drug that produces immortality has been found. It is precisely because of this drug that the Norstrilians are as hard as they are, winnowing out any of their own children who are not suitable, and carefully guarding the drug against any type of theft. The extremely rich Norstilians do not want to lose their monopoly.

The drug is actually produced by sick sheep.

"Mother Hitton's Littul Kittons" is the story of one man's attempt to steal the drug and break the monopoly, not to mention becoming very rich himself.
